Colombo

Our home base is in Arthurugiriya, where my mother-in-law lives, and we are about 30 minutes south of Colombo. There's so much to see here, but the infrastructure is poorly developed. A newly built highway has helped alleviate some traffic, but there are still too few entrances and exits for it to be of real use. For example, to get from Arthurugiriya to Unawatuna (check map), it's 73 miles, but the trip takes over two hours because we have to travel through small towns with crazy traffic to get the closest entrance to the highway, which is about a 30 minute drive through several small towns.

Here is a picture of one of the many fish we saw on the sides of a walkway to the pool at our hotel in Colombo.

Before we left Colombo, the boys' aunt suggested flying kites on the beach. What a great idea for a windy and overcast day! In the background is a small boardwalk of various wares to buy. We bought a snake and bird kite for the boys; they make great souvenirs. If you look closely, you can see Cody's snake kite in the far left corner of the picture. I couldn't believe how high it flew!

Aidan is flying his bird kite and having a great time; he can't wait to fly it again in Washington State!

After returning to Atthama's (grandmother) house, Aidan enjoys some fresh coconut water.
